Officially, Hooded Gowns Are in Style

A dress with a hood is pretty much the coolest thing you can wear on the red carpet on the runway; just look at Margot Robbie for evidence.
The recent red carpet has belonged to Margot Robbie. The Australian actor is displaying positively vivacious appearances while promoting her most recent movies. She previously donned a sombre black hooded, halter-neck gown from Alaa’s spring/summer 2023 collection to the Los Angeles premiere of her next movie Babylon. Prior to that, she wore a playful buttercup Gucci mini-dress to the The Hollywood Reporter’s Women In Entertainment Gala on December 7.
With natural makeup, a few face-framing hair strands, a silver cuff bracelet, and a pair of black sheer Calzedonia pantyhose, the star of the upcoming Barbie movie enhanced her hooded dress (that, incidentally, cost about as much as a fancy latte).
The avant-garde style is by no means new, but it does require a certain amount of self-assurance and fashion acumen to carry off a fashion-forward touch like a hooded gown. To appear in Alaa’s 1986 spring-summer haute couture show in Paris, Grace Jones was notably seen donning a glittery magenta hooded dress. Style suggestions that feel current now are those that are worn with dramatic tone makeup, such as a bold dark lip, and no accessories. In terms of beauty and accessories, one doesn’t need to go overboard because the hood itself makes a statement; Robbie’s own outfit exemplifies this “less is more” philosophy.
Both the red carpet and the runways have recently witnessed a return of hooded dresses. A black hooded dress with a side cut-out, accentuated cat-eye eyeliner, and dizzying platform shoes were all featured in Versace’s spring/summer 2023 runway presentation. Several slinky hooded dresses in rich jewel tones from Saint Laurent’s spring/summer 2023 collection (seen above) were styled with black sunglasses and large, edgy shoulder toppers. It’s obvious what the style is here: glam, laid-back, and little theatrical.
The task has been grasped by famous people like Ashley Graham, who is pictured above attending the TIME Person of the Year reception in a mesh gown adorned with crystals.
When she stepped out for the CFDA Awards in New York City in a futuristic grey hooded gown from the Lily et Cie vintage archives in the beginning of November, TikTok creator Addison Rae made a statement and solidified her status as a rising fashion star.
Katie Holmes cut an edgy figure in a form-fitting black hooded gown worn to attend Tom Ford’s spring 2023 ready-to-wear show in September, months before igniting a fresh controversy about the resurgence of the much-decried dress-over-pants style.

For a New Year’s Eve party, wouldn’t a hooded minidress be so much fun? (Of course only wearing glitter foundation.) In the event that it is too late to locate one, let 2023 be the year in which we don hooded gowns and, by golly, whatever else that would have once seemed risqué or challenging to carry off. Along with dresses worn over jeans.
