suitably titled episode five of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Partings marks the series’ halfway point, and the one little issue I had with it—its languid pace—has been fixed because the impending battle is now closer than ever! Beginning where The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Episode 4 left off, a lot is occurring as we watch how reluctant alliances are gradually formed to combat Sauron, who is the common adversary of Middle-earth.
Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) and Elendil (Lloyd Owen) persuade Mriel (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) to send the people of Nmenor to the Southlands to fight the dark force alongside the Elves, but Galadriel has her work cut out for her persuading Halbrand (Charlie Vickers) to change his mind. While The Stranger (Daniel Weyman) demonstrates a glimpse of his lavish powers during a rescue attempt, startling the often sympathetic Nori, Isildur (Maxim Baldry) wants to join the fight as well while attempting to win over his angry father (Markella Kavenagh).
On the one hand, Elrond (Robert Aramayo) is prevented from violating his word to Durin IV (Owain Arthur) about having Mithril by the hard truth he learns from Gil-galad (Benjamin Walker) and Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards), who are now in control of the fate of the Elves. However, despite Arondir’s urging, Bronwyn’s (Nazanin Boniadi) hopes are waning as half of the remaining Southlanders instead choose to fight alongside Adar (Joseph Mawle), the leader of the Orcs. The broken sword with Sauron’s mark is shown to be in Theo’s (Tyro Muhafidin) possession when he stays behind. The second section of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is filled with a terrible conflict and impending war!
It’s Galadriel’s turn to shine in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Episode 5, and she does so with chic sass by teaching the Nmenórean men and ladies a thing or two about fighting orcs. Although there will undoubtedly be complaints about how Galadriel easily and single-handedly defeats the “skilled” Nmenórean men and women, this specific training session in the episode is intentionally crafted to thrill LOTR aficionados. The wording used to distinguish between friends and the aforementioned reluctant allies is another highlight of Episode 5, particularly when it comes to Elrond and Durin’s friendship, which is unquestionably a fan favourite bromance! It’s the final image, though, when Galadriel and Halbrand board the Nmenóreans’ ship to navigate the choppy waters while decked out in gorgeous armour, thanks to costume designer Kate Hawley for her attention to detail. When Galadriel enters the scene as a hero, you can’t help but feel giddy with anticipation for what’s to come, especially given her union with Halbrand.
It’s also intriguing to see how the chess pieces are finally aligned with the Queen’s protection, which in this case means preventing unthinkable devastation for Middle-earth. Given how The Stranger is connected to all of this and in particular, whether or not he is Gandalf, the expectation for the catastrophic conflict has undoubtedly multiplied. Political ambiguity also exists in regards to everyone’s genuine goals, which are torn between good and evil.
It will be intriguing to watch how skillfully the battle is executed and whether the intricate means define the result now that The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has successfully created intrigue for the deadly war. Because even if The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power had a “no expense spared” guiding principle when it comes to the intricate details of bringing Middle-earth to life, it’s how they end the first season that will really allow the series to make its mark in the fantasy genre.
