Following the defamation trial verdict, Mads Mikkelsen discussed Johnny Depp’s prospective return to the Fantastic Beasts series.
Johnny Depp appears to be returning to Hollywood after winning his defamation lawsuit against ex-wife Amber Heard, since it was recently announced that the actor is ready to direct a movie after 25 years. Even while it’s possible that the actor won’t be reprising his role as Captain Jack Sparow in the Pirates of the Caribbean series, there’s a chance he’ll play Gellert Grindelwald.

As a result of Amber Heard’s accusations against him, Mads Mikkelsen took over Depp’s role as the villainous wizard Grindelwald in the third Fantastic Beasts movie, Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Fans of Depp were highly critical of Mikkelsen’s hiring, and in a recent interview with Deadline, the actor talked openly about the possibility of Depp reprising his role.
In an interview with Deadline, Mads suggested that since Depp won the trial, things might now change. He added, “He won the suit, the court [case]—so let’s see if he comes back.” Further stating that he had no reservations over Depp’s return, Mikkelsen remarked, “He could. I’m a huge Johnny fan. He’s a great actor, and I think he did a great job.”
The Danish actor also admitted to Deadline that playing the part was daunting, especially in light of how Depp’s admirers reacted to him. The actor insisted that he wouldn’t imitate Johnny’s performance as Grindelwald and that the key was to find a middle ground where he could inject his own personality while still moving Depp’s part forward.
Depp will also star in Netflix’s La Favorite, in which he will play King Louis XV, following releasing his new record with Jeff Beck. Only France will apparently stream the movie.
