Showrunner of House of the Dragon on fan shipping Rhaenyra and Daemon: These days, nothing shocks me.

Ryan Condal, the show’s creator, talked about the on-screen romance between Rhaenyra Targaryen and Daemon Targaryen.

In its first season, the predecessor to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, had had viewers enthralled. The programme, which starts 172 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke in the first season, focuses on the history of House Targaryen. While there are many similarities between the prequel and Game of Thrones, one of them also involves how incestuous relationships are portrayed.

One such relationship that has caught fans’ attention in House of the Dragon is that between Matt Smith’s Daemon Targaryen and his niece Rhaenyra Targaryen, who was initially portrayed by Milly Alcock before Emma D’Arcy took up the role of the elder version of the character. Fans appeared to become hopeful after seeing the chemistry between young Rhaenyra and Daemon and even started to ship their relationship.

Showrunner Ryan Condal was asked if he was shocked by the response from fans to Rhaenyra and Daemon’s romance in a recent interview with Variety “I mean, these days, nothing shocks me. I had no idea whatsoever how people would react to that. Look, it’s a part of the story, and in my opinion, that’s what makes it fascinating because, to our modern sensibilities and in a way, it’s taboo.”

Condal gave Game of Thrones credit for laying the foundation and normalising Targaryen mating customs. The showrunner said that Matt, Milly, and Emma in later episodes deserve equal credit for their performances, which helped viewers understand what their characters did. Condal hinted that the “complicated connection” between Daemon and Rhaenyra, played by Matt Smith and Emma D’Arcy, will be a feature of the programme.
